A month after the war broke out in Ukraine, I gathered a group of student volunteers to help me run Japanese calligraphy workshops for refugees.
We invited all those who were fleeing the war to come to the class. Using brushes and ink, we were able to create artistic lines and even abstract signs that the refugees had never seen before. By the end of June 2022, more than 2,000 works had been created. Stories from the lives of different people, their struggles with social separation and overcrowding, their desires and plans were interwoven with our calligraphic work together.
